Focussing the following objectives, the registered association of pro Ruhrgebiet has been committed to the future-oriented development of the Ruhr Area since 1981:

• supporting the structural change in the Ruhr Area actively
• improving the image of the Ruhr Area internally as well as externally
• promote the interests of the Ruhr Area
• increase the citizens autonomy
• support the dialogue between the economy, academia, administration and politics
• enhance young people's vocational and entrepreneurial opportunities.

pro Ruhrgebiet is a registered association, a private and non-profit-making institution. The members of which are approximately 350 companies and personalities.

The Executive Committee consists of Dieter Bongert (Chairman), Helmut an de Meulen and Eckhard Brockhoff (Deputy Chairman), Dr. Herbert Krämer and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Gramke (Honorary Chairmen) as well as eight further Directors. The General Secretary is Dr. Roland Kirchhof.

The curatorium, an advisory board reflecting the regional expertise, consists of the Minister of Economic Affairs of Northrhine-Westfalia (Chairman), the Mayors and Heads of the Administration of the Landkreise in the Ruhr-Area (15), the political-economic spokesmen of the Northrhine-Westfalian parliamentary parties and further outstanding persons in public life.

  awarding the honorary title "Citizen of the Ruhr Area" to outstanding citizens

  participation in the Kultur Ruhr GmbH,
  participation in the cultural festival "RuhrTriennale"
  support of the European Klassik Festival Ruhr
• sports promotion
  supporting the Ruhr Olympic Games, the biggest regional sports event in Germany for highly talented young people
• science
  project "MedEcon Ruhr" for the development and stabilization of the status of the Ruhr Area as a health location, accompanied by all Ruhr area-networks, forum for the permanent interchange with the universities of applied science
• politics and society
  communication of common regional interests into relevant state institutions
• innovations and structural measures
  project "Gründer Support Ruhr" with the objective to support Start up's on their way towards entrepreneurial success within the framework of "GO" - the start up-offensive NRW

  advertising-campaign in schools for computer science and engineering studies
